Family Home Extension & Loft Conversion | Buckinghamshire Countryside | Contemporary Industrial Design
DPE Architecture has been commissioned to transform a compact terraced family home in the Buckinghamshire countryside into a spacious, light-filled contemporary residence — maximising every square metre for a growing family.
The Brief
The clients required a significant uplift in space and functionality without losing the charm of their countryside setting. The home, which overlooks open fields and mature trees, had become increasingly cramped and poorly laid out for modern family life. The goal was to reimagine the entire floor plan while incorporating bold, innovative architectural interventions throughout.
Design Approach
The scheme combines two of the most effective and sought-after home extension strategies available to UK homeowners:
Side Return Extension — reclaiming underused external space to dramatically widen the ground floor and unlock a fully open-plan kitchen, dining and living arrangement
Loft Conversion with L-shaped Dormer — one of the most space-efficient loft conversion types available, creating a generous new master bedroom suite with en-suite bathroom under a transformed roofline
The result is a completely reimagined layout — open, airy and flooded with natural light.
Style & Materials
The clients were drawn to a contemporary design with industrial influences — an aesthetic that emphasises the honest, expressive use of materials. Exposed structural elements, raw textures and carefully considered detailing give the home a distinctive character that balances its rural Buckinghamshire setting with a confident, modern interior language.
