London Terraced House Extension and Reconfiguration | London

Victorian Terrace Rear Extension | North London | Contemporary Open-Plan Kitchen & Living Space

DPE Architecture has transformed the ground floor of a late Victorian terraced house in North London, replacing a failing rear conservatory with a considered, contemporary extension that redefines how the home feels and functions.

The Brief

The clients wanted to unlock the full potential of their North London Victorian terrace, a property type that is among the most commonly extended in Greater London, yet demands a sensitive and skilled architectural response. The existing rear conservatory had deteriorated significantly and offered poor thermal performance and limited year-round usability. Despite this, its connection to the garden, the sense of light, openness and framed outdoor views, was central to what the clients loved about the home and became the foundational brief for the design.

Design Approach

Rather than simply replacing like-for-like, DPE Architecture took the opportunity to fundamentally reorder the ground floor plan, improving circulation, enhancing natural light penetration and creating a seamless, intuitive flow from the front of the house through to the garden.
The result is a generous, open-plan kitchen and living space that feels calm and expansive, a quality of space that is increasingly sought after in London residential architecture but rarely achieved without careful, detail-led design.

Key Design Outcomes

Victorian terrace rear extension replacing an existing conservatory
Open-plan kitchen and living space with improved layout and flow
Maximised natural light through considered glazing strategy
Seamless indoor-outdoor connection with direct garden access
Contemporary minimalist interior within a period North London property

Style & Character

The aesthetic is quiet and composed, a contemporary minimalist intervention that respects the Victorian bones of the building without mimicking them. The space feels curated rather than designed, with clarity of layout and quality of materials doing the work in place of decorative gesture.

Victorian Terraced House Extension & Loft Conversion | East London | Conservation Area | Mansard Roof & Side Extension

DPE Architecture has completed a comprehensive transformation of a late Victorian terraced house just off Roman Road in East London, delivering a beautifully resolved family home that balances contemporary design ambition with the heritage sensitivities of a designated conservation area.

Location & Context

Situated moments from Victoria Park in one of East London's most sought-after residential neighbourhoods, this late Victorian terrace sits within a conservation area, meaning every design decision had to be carefully considered against local planning policy and the character of the existing streetscape. Projects of this nature require both design skill and planning expertise, and represent some of the most rewarding and complex residential work available to a London architect.

The Brief

The clients, a growing family, wanted to extract the maximum potential from their Victorian terrace, adapting the layout and increasing the floor area to meet the demands of modern family life without compromising the character of the original building. The brief called for additional bedrooms, improved living spaces and a home that felt cohesive, considered and thoroughly contemporary throughout.

Design & Architecture

DPE Architecture developed a dual-strategy approach combining two of the most effective interventions for East London Victorian terraces:

Side Return Extension, reclaiming the underutilised side passage to significantly widen the ground floor, enabling a fully open-plan kitchen, dining and living arrangement
Mansard Roof Extension, one of the most space-efficient and planning-sympathetic loft conversion types available in London conservation areas, adding substantial upper floor accommodation beneath a transformed roofline

Interior Design & Specification

The interior was designed to the same level of ambition as the architecture, with a series of bespoke elements that elevate the finished home:

Contemporary feature staircase, a newly designed stair rising through the full height of the house, acting as a sculptural spine to the redesigned interior
Fitted joinery, bespoke storage and cabinetry throughout
Glass roof, maximising natural light into the heart of the plan
Reclaimed timber flooring, adding warmth, texture and a nod to the Victorian heritage of the building

Services Provided

Full architectural design services from concept through to completion, including planning application, technical design, contractor procurement, contract administration and construction oversight.

Project Outcome

The project was delivered successfully to the clients' complete satisfaction, a transformed family home that makes the most of its East London location, respects its conservation area setting and delivers the space and quality of life the family needed.

Victorian House Renovation & Extension | South London | Open-Plan Ground Floor Transformation

DPE Architecture has reimagined the ground floor of a characterful Victorian terraced house in South London, resolving a cramped, poorly lit layout through a considered combination of structural remodelling and a modest but impactful side and rear extension.

Location & Context

Set on a picturesque residential street in South London, this period Victorian property is typical of the housing stock found across neighbourhoods such as Clapham, Brixton, Peckham, Herne Hill, Dulwich and Crystal Palace, areas where homeowners are increasingly investing in high quality architectural renovations to unlock the latent potential of their Victorian homes. The property's period character and streetscape setting were central considerations throughout the design process.

The Challenge

Despite its charm and character, the house suffered from two of the most common problems found in unrenovated Victorian terraces: a lack of natural light penetrating into the rear and middle of the plan, and a fragmented, non-functional ground floor layout that no longer suited contemporary family life. The clients needed a home that worked, for them and their dogs.

Design Approach

Rather than pursuing a large-scale extension, DPE Architecture developed a precise, efficient design strategy combining:

Side Extension, a carefully scaled addition that widens the ground floor footprint and resolves the awkward existing geometry of the plan
Rear Extension, extending the back of the house to create a generous kitchen and living area with a direct connection to the garden
Internal Remodelling, removing non-structural walls and reimagining the entire ground floor circulation to create a largely open-plan living, dining and kitchen space that flows naturally from front to back

Design Outcome

The result is a bright, functional and beautifully resolved family home that retains all the period character and charm of the original Victorian property, high ceilings, original features and a sense of solidity, while delivering the open, light-filled contemporary living environment the clients needed.

Key outcomes include:

Significantly improved natural light throughout the ground floor
Open-plan kitchen, dining and living space with improved garden connection
Retained period features blended seamlessly with contemporary detailing
Practical, pet-friendly layout designed around how the clients actually live
Sympathetic street elevation preserving the character of the South London streetscape

Why This Project Resonates

This project is a strong example of what thoughtful, restrained architectural intervention can achieve. Not every home needs a dramatic transformation, sometimes the most valuable thing an architect can do is listen carefully, diagnose precisely and design efficiently. The result here speaks for itself: a happy family, a beautiful home and a period property that has finally reached its potential.

Rear View

Family Home Extension & Loft Conversion | Buckinghamshire Countryside | Contemporary Industrial Design

DPE Architecture has been commissioned to transform a compact terraced family home in the Buckinghamshire countryside into a spacious, light-filled contemporary residence, maximising every square metre for a growing family.

The Brief

The clients required a significant uplift in space and functionality without losing the charm of their countryside setting. The home, which overlooks open fields and mature trees, had become increasingly cramped and poorly laid out for modern family life. The goal was to reimagine the entire floor plan while incorporating bold, innovative architectural interventions throughout.

Design Approach

The scheme combines two of the most effective and sought-after home extension strategies available to UK homeowners:
Side Return Extension, reclaiming underused external space to dramatically widen the ground floor and unlock a fully open-plan kitchen, dining and living arrangement
Loft Conversion with L-shaped Dormer, one of the most space-efficient loft conversion types available, creating a generous new master bedroom suite with en-suite bathroom under a transformed roofline

The result is a completely reimagined layout, open, airy and flooded with natural light.

Style & Materials

The clients were drawn to a contemporary design with industrial influences, an aesthetic that emphasises the honest, expressive use of materials. Exposed structural elements, raw textures and carefully considered detailing give the home a distinctive character that balances its rural Buckinghamshire setting with a confident, modern interior language.

Services Provided

Full architectural design services including feasibility study, concept design, spatial planning and design development.

Thatched Cottage Extension | Hertfordshire Countryside | Sensitive Rural Extension & Planning

DPE Architecture has successfully delivered a sympathetic extension to a characterful thatched cottage in the Hertfordshire countryside, enhancing the home's functionality and its connection to the garden while fully respecting the traditional rural character that makes this property type so distinctive.

The Brief

The clients needed additional living space and a stronger, more considered relationship between the interior of the cottage and its terrace and garden. For a listed or traditionally constructed rural property of this nature, simply adding space is never straightforward, the design had to earn its place, sitting in harmony with the existing thatched roofline, traditional materials and countryside setting.

Planning & Heritage Sensitivity

This project involved a lengthy and complex planning process, a common experience for rural cottage extensions in Hertfordshire and across the wider South East, particularly where properties sit within conservation areas, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) or are subject to local design guides that protect rural character.

DPE Architecture successfully navigated this process, demonstrating our expertise in rural planning applications and heritage-sensitive design, an increasingly valued specialism as more homeowners seek to extend and improve traditional countryside properties.

Design Outcome

The completed extension delivers exactly what the clients envisioned:

Additional living space that feels natural and integrated within the existing cottage
Seamless indoor-outdoor connection between the interior, terrace and garden
Sympathetic materiality that respects and complements the thatched roof and traditional construction
Considered massing that sits quietly within the rural landscape without competing with the original dwelling

Why This Project Matters

Extending a thatched cottage is one of the most technically and aesthetically demanding residential extension briefs an architect can undertake. It requires an understanding of traditional construction methods, thatch as a living material, rural planning policy and the subtleties of countryside design. This project demonstrates DPE Architecture's capability across all of these dimensions.

Victorian Terrace Extension & Full Refurbishment | Hertfordshire | Side & Rear Extension

DPE Architecture has delivered a comprehensive transformation of a Victorian terraced house in Hertfordshire, combining a side and rear extension with a full whole-house refurbishment to create a completely reimagined family home from top to bottom.

The Brief

The clients wanted to fundamentally change how their Victorian terrace worked, not simply adding space, but rethinking the entire home. The project scope encompassed both a significant extension and a thorough internal refurbishment, covering every room in the house including bathrooms, bedrooms and the main living areas. The result is a home that feels entirely new while retaining the solid, characterful bones of its Victorian origins.

Extension Strategy

DPE Architecture developed a dual-extension approach to maximise the available footprint:

Side Extension, utilising the underused side of the plot to widen the ground floor and unlock a more generous, functional plan
Rear Extension, pushing back into the garden to create expanded kitchen, dining and living accommodation with a strong connection to the outdoor space

Together, the two extensions significantly increase the usable floor area of the home, resolving the typical spatial constraints of the Victorian terrace typology and creating a layout that genuinely suits contemporary family life.

Full House Refurbishment

Alongside the extension work, DPE Architecture oversaw a complete internal refurbishment throughout the property, including:

Bathrooms, fully redesigned and fitted to a contemporary specification
Bedrooms, reconfigured and refurbished to maximise space, storage and comfort
Ground Floor, remodelled to create an open, flowing layout that connects the new extension to the existing rooms seamlessly
Throughout, new finishes, fixtures and detailing applied consistently across the whole house to create a coherent, considered interior

Design Character

True to DPE Architecture's contemporary minimalist approach, the design strips back the unnecessary and focuses on space, light and quality of finish, allowing the extended and refurbished Victorian terrace to feel calm, uncluttered and thoroughly modern without losing its period warmth.

New Build Contemporary House

Hertfordshire Rural New Build | Contemporary Detached Home | Charred Timber & Green Roof

A neglected backland plot in the Hertfordshire countryside is being transformed into a beautifully considered, contemporary two-bedroom detached home by DPE Architecture.

This challenging rural new build project demonstrates our expertise in sensitive countryside design, creating a bespoke residence that sits lightly in its landscape while delivering a high quality living environment.

Design & Materials

The proposed scheme draws on natural and sustainable materials chosen to complement the rural setting, including charred timber cladding (shou sugi ban) and a sedum green roof. These low maintenance, environmentally conscious choices ensure the home will age gracefully and embed itself naturally within the Hertfordshire countryside over time.

Planning & Sustainability

Designed with rural planning policy in mind, the scheme carefully preserves key countryside views and enhances the natural setting rather than competing with it. The use of a green roof and natural cladding also supports biodiversity and reduces the visual impact of the new dwelling.

Services Provided

Full architectural design services from concept through to planning application, including site appraisal, design development, planning drawings and planning support.

Project Status: Currently at planning stage.
